Week 11: Brainstorming Ideas
This week, I started to create a book of common nodes and variables from UE5 to use as a reference in the future. This process helped me understand blueprints much more and made me realise I can create more complex UI prototypes in UE5. Originally, I intended to create 3 functional UI elements in UE5, such as a health bar, speedometer, and item collection counter; however, now with more knowledge of UE5, I intend to spend more time on my UI designs to create detailed prototypes containing multiple functioning UI elements. To achieve this, I will dedicate more time to learning UE5 and spend more time on the UI design process; therefore, I will complete my 3 UI designs for the semester 3 deadline, rather than the semester 2 deadline. By doing this, I aim to develop my knowledge and skills within UE5 and create more detailed UI prototypes that I can use in the degree show.
Even though I intend to spend more time on my UI designs, I have started the process of brainstorming ideas for the 3 prototypes. For the first prototype, I aim to use a Western theme as I want to explore new design styles I haven't used before. I have recently been playing Crime Scene Cleaner, and its smooth and satisfying interaction system inspired me to create a looting system for a Western open-world game. For the prototype, I aim for the player to interact with doors, drawers, and cupboards to collect loot, and perhaps search for keys or notes to enter restricted areas containing better loot. With a Western theme in mind, I searched Fab and found a variety of free Western environments and assets that I could use.
On Friday afternoon, I presented the first draft of my poster in the PR1 Gallery, and it was useful to explain my ideas and intentions and receive feedback from other students and lecturers.
